Resist Like This >>
I’m a high school teacher. my resistance strategy is to create an anti-oppressive classroom (not just a reading list that isn’t reflected in the actual dynamics between myself and my students). as a white teacher working with a majority black & brown student body, it is not enough for me to assign works by people of color, non-americans, queer folx, and so on: i must begin to actually dismantle the structures that oppress students in my own spaces and challenge the school system to be more than a factory. I take freire’s call for a teacher to recognize that power and authority do not reside in my hands, but the responsibility to share power and learn alongside my students does, and that doing so is an act of resistance in a capitalistic society that seeks compliance, not active thought or creative engagement, from its students.
starting a book club of cis white people and reading books that inform about race, priviledge, and the history of the resistance – Doing the work of educating ourselves so we can help to change things
Counter white supremacy and xenophobia in all classroom design assignments through research and radical inclusion.
